AIKS Mourns the Passing of Anil Choudhury: A Stalwart in the Fight for People's Rights and Secular Democracy

New Delhi, April 14, 2025: The All India Kisan Sabha (AIKS) expressed profound grief over the demise of Anil Choudhury, a relentless champion of secular democracy, people’s rights, and social justice. Choudhury, known for his unwavering commitment to resisting communalism and corporate exploitation, passed away following a severe heart attack at Fortis Hospital in Gurugram.

A former General Secretary of the Jawaharlal Nehru University Students Union post-Emergency, Choudhury also served as the General Secretary of the Indian Social Action Forum (INSAF) and was a founding member of the Bhumi Adhikar Andolan. For over four decades, he remained a key mobiliser in movements for land rights, ecological justice, and against neoliberal policies and state repression.

Choudhury played a pivotal role in resisting the controversial Land Acquisition Ordinance of 2014, which aimed to dilute protections for farmers and marginalised communities. The united opposition, under the banner of the Bhumi Adhikar Andolan—of which AIKS is a part—forced the withdrawal of the ordinance, marking a significant victory for people’s movements in the country.

In a joint statement, AIKS President Ashok Dhawale and General Secretary Vijoo Krishnan paid tribute to Choudhury’s lifelong efforts to create a just, equitable, and sustainable society. “He was a guiding light for people’s struggles across India. His passing is a tremendous loss to all progressive and democratic forces,” the statement read.

AIKS extended heartfelt condolences to his family and the many activists who drew inspiration from his work.
